From global plastic flows, it is estimated that 32% of annual plastic production is leaked into the terrestrial and marine environment. Peer-reviewed research has already found that in Australia three-quarters of rubbish found along our coastline is plastic, comprising more than 35 million items, with up to 80,000 fragments per square kilometre in Australian domestic waters.

Numerous organisations, agencies and community groups have been collecting information on plastic pollution in the environment. However, to date, there has not been a central repository of this information.

This portal is being developed with feedback from stakeholder groups around the country, including collaborators across industry, research, government and civil society groups. With their input, this portal is being developed to make existing and new information available free of cost and limitations where possible.
